BGKI stumbled across Jacklyn Laryea and what a treasure indeed…

    What inspires you to blog?

When i see something exciting happening in the world of fashion, and knowing what i can contribute to it.

How would you define your personal style?

    Eclectic, chic, unique, surprising

Do you find that you follow fashion trends, or do you play by your own rules?

I never actively follow fashion trends because not all trends are created equal. I def wear what I like and what fits my personality and my body. I personally don’t care what’s in or what’s out. I do know that i’ve loved anything beaded or sequined since I was a baby and will wear them till the day I die!

Item to get, what are you searching for right now?

    • spiked motorcycle jacket

Are there any colors you tend to shy away from?

    Any pastel colors

When you hear the term “Black Girl Killing It” what comes to mind?

Black girls have been killing it for years, I think the only difference is that we actually recognize and own it now! Keep killing it ladies!

As a child were you always into clothes or did you grow into your own fashion sense?

I was always into clothes. I used to cut the bottoms of curtains to make clothes for my barbie dolls!

Do you participate in your local fashion scene?

There is no “local fashion scene” where I live, but if there was I def would!

How does your day to day life factor into your wardrobe choices?

I’ve always had a creative job, so thankfully, I’ve been able to wear whatever I want to work.

What is your greatest fashion pet peeve?

Harem pants and people wearing trends that do not suit their bodies or personalities.

Have you ever tried your hand at design or sewing?

My grand-mother was a seamstress, so it runs in the family! I’m also a fashion illustrator, so designing is not too far-fetched for me.

Are there any designers that you like to wear or whose clothing stands out with you?

I really admire the legacy of Alexander Mcqueen because i think he is a true artist and a risk taker. he always did exactly what he wanted and found ways to bring his creativity and artistry onto his runway shows. He was consistently fresh, exciting and pushing the envelope. I’m also a huge fan of Marchesa because i think the craftsmanship and intricacy of the clothing is always out of this world. Both Mcqueen and Marchesa (As far away as they might be for the other) have a diligence and a dedication to the brand and the craft that, I think, is inspirational.

    Who are your style icons?

There are so many! if i had to pick i would say: a young Elizabeth Taylor, Edie Sedwick, Olsen twins and Nicole Richie 2008-present.

Your five must-haves as a girl:

    • a great sense of style (that sells ANYTHING)
    • great eyeliner
    • motorcycle jacket or blazer that fits you like a glove
    • killer 6 inch heels
    • a go to purse/handbag

Attorney Jillian shares with BGKI her sense of style…

    What inspires you to blog?

I’ve always been a lover of fashion and art. Unfortunately, my profession doesn’t allow me to be too artistic so I use clothes as a way to express my artistic side. Plus, I love meeting new people and blogging is an excellent way to do that.

How would you define your personal style?

For the most part, I just wear what I love. That usually involves pretty dresses, jeans, and heels. I’m always attracted to classic pieces that have unique elements.

Do you find that you follow fashion trends, or do you play by your own rules?

Hmmm… a little of both. I subscribe to a ton of magazines and love looking at the trends. If a trend speaks to me, I’m definitely on board. However, I’m not afraid to play by my own rules.

Items to get, what are you searching for right now?

    • A structured bag (I love love love Fendi’s Peekaboo bag)
    • Strappy sandals
    • The perfect white silk button down shirt

Are there any colors you tend to shy away from, and if so why?

    I’ll try any color once.

When you hear the term “Black Girl Killing It” what comes to mind?

I think of a woman that is completely confident in who she is and what she likes. A woman that is confident in her abilities and knows that height, weight, complexion, hair, and other superficial things are not indicators of beauty. A woman that knows that she is beautifu just because she says so.

As a child were you always into clothes or did you grow into your own fashion sense?

I’ve been playing in my mom’s closet since I could remember. My mom loved fashion too, so I’ve always been around her and have adopted quite a few of her fashion mantras.

Do you participate in your local fashion scene?

I’ve definitely been to Miami Fashion Week a couple of times, but I haven’t been as active as I would like to be. That’s one of my New Years Resolutions.

How does your day to day life factor into your wardrobe choices?

I wear a lot of suits to work so I’m usually drawn to pieces that can transition easily from day to night.

What is your greatest fashion pet peeve?

LOL. I guess that I absolutely hate ill fitting jeans. Crack is definitely whack!

Have you ever tried your hand at design or sewing?

My mom is a great seamstress. She’s tried to show me a couple things over the years, but I’m definitely not as good as she is. I can fix a button and hem my skirts pretty well though.

Are there any designers that you like to wear or whose clothing stands out with you?

For quick outfits to wear to a dinner I always fly to the BCBG store. There’s always something there. I’m also in love with Banana Republic and J Crew.

    Who are your style icons?

    Overall: My mommy

    Celebrity: Victoria Beckham

Your five must-haves as a girl:

    • killer pair of heels
    • crisp white shirt
    • great pair of dark wash jeans
    • black cocktail length dress
    • pair of cute flats

BGKI caught up with Superwoman, I think you normal folk call her Brandee Evans…

    What inspires you to blog?

As an English teacher, I have always enjoyed writing. I love that blogs allow you to express yourself. Blogging gives me a sense of freedom.

How would you define your personal style?

My style is edgy and funky with a lot of sass.

Do you find that you follow fashion trends, or do you play by your own rules?

I always play by my own rules.

Items to get, what are you searching for right now?

    • Always a higher heel
    • That perfect pair of leggings
    • A fierce dress for Valentine’s Day (I plan to pick that up in Japan)

Are there any colors you tend to shy away from, and if so why?

I don’t dislike any colors- as long as it looks good I wear it.

When you hear the term “Black Girl Killing It” what comes to mind?

I think of an African American woman, who has a great sense of style and is comfortable with who she is.

As a child were you always into clothes or did you grow into your own fashion sense?

Yes, I was always into clothes. I used to write down what I wore to school, and tried not to repeat it. I did most of my shopping sprees in LA during the summer because I didn’t want to see anyone in my clothes.

Do you participate in your local fashion scene?

It depends. If it’s something that defines my personal style, yes I follow the trends. If not, no I do not.

How does your day to day life factor into your wardrobe choices?

I am like Barbie. I have different wardrobes for different things. It varies. I will be in a teacher wardrobe one day, a funky dancer, the next, and sporty on others. My clothing depends on the role I am playing for that day.

What is your greatest fashion pet peeve?

Kitten heels make me gag! Quite frankly, they are disrespectful.

Have you ever tried your hand at design or sewing?

I designed my wedding dress. My mother in law brought my design to life.

Are there any designers that you like to wear or whose clothing stands out with you?

I wear what looks good on my body, I absolutely love Michael Kors, Armani, Giuseppe Zanotti, and Jovani

    Who are your style icons?

Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Moss, Jennifer Lopez, and Beyonce to name a few.

Your five must-haves as a girl:

    • Of course a little black dress
    • Fierce stilettos
    • A funky jacket
    • My car power outlet (so I can flat iron my hair at any moment)
    • Lip gloss

Zimbabwean British blogger Ngoni Chikwenengere tell us about her style…

    What inspires you to blog?

I live in a small town so fashion here is pretty limited so I use my blog as an outlet to engage with like minded people

How would you define your personal style?

I wake up and thrown on whatever feels right according to my mood, I go from full on gothic to girly and womanly and everything in between.

Do you find that you follow fashion trends, or do you play by your own rules?

I play by my own rules by that I mean if I like it and it suits me I’m going to wear it despite what anyone else thinks.

Items to get, what are you searching for right now?

    • Balenciaga Glycine bag
    • Micheal Kors Chronoragh in Rose Gold
    • The perfect pair of black jeans

Are there any colors you tend to shy away from, and if so why?

I wear alot of black so I’m trying very hard to bring more colour to my wardrobe.

When you hear the term “Black Girl Killing It” what comes to mind?

I think of a Black Girl who wears what she wants with attitude looks fantastic and confident while wearing it.

As a child were you always into clothes or did you grow into your own fashion sense?

I’ve always been into clothes, fashion was always an expressive thing for me/

Do you participate in your local fashion scene?

My town doesn’t have one as yet but I’m pretty active in London, I work with new designers, promote brands and ofcourse the fashion events.

How does your day to day life factor into your wardrobe choices?

I’m currently an Art student at university and start Fashion in September so I wear what I want, also as I’m surrounded by other artists I tend to dress a little crazier.

What is your greatest fashion pet peeve?

Girls who dress the same, I hate seeing a friendship group and they all look the same.

Have you ever tried your hand at design or sewing?

I can sew and design, I can’t wait to start my own label as I find some clothing just don’t fit my curvy shape.

    • Hussein Chalayan < his work just inspires me and of course
    • Mary Katrantzou and Erdem< they’re work is feminine but tailored.

BGKI has been monitoring Taylor Freeman’s style evolve for over a year now, it’s about time we do our part and share her…

    What inspires you to blog?

I just love being able to show others what outfit I have put together for the day and getting feedback. Blogging for me can also be a personal thing, like sharing what has bothered me for the day, what I discovered that day, or what is just going on in my life period. As a teenager, I have a lot to say and get off my mind, so blogging is like my outlet for it all. Plus, blogging gives me the chance to check out other fashion blogs to see what others are wearing and what has inspired them. The world of fashion just changes so much and I appreciate the fact that I can see those changes with just the click of a mouse.

How would you define your personal style?

I would define my style as a mixture of grunge, glam, androgynous, and surprisingly, tacky. I used tacky as a style because I’m the type of person that doesn’t mind putting together different types of prints and somehow making them work. What other people would perceive as tacky, I simply perceive as art. My style is also a mixture of the different family members I grew up around right from my grandmother to my youngest brother. I often find myself sneaking into his closet and grabbing some of his things (it’s crazy how I’m so small I can fit into my eleven year old brothers clothes!)

Do you find that you follow fashion trends, or do you play by your own rules?

I try my best to stay away from trends because I don’t want to feel like I’m following the crowd. Growing up in North Carolina, I notice how almost everyone around here dresses the same and if you dare to step out of the box, you get laughed at or talked about. If you stay inside of the box, you just merge in with the rest of the crowd and no one really notices to you. As for myself, I want to be noticed. I’ve grown enough confidence over the years to be able to show people that I can be my own person in a town where different means weird. I think I can settle with being weird ;)

Items to get, what are you searching for right now?

    • Doc Martens
    • Sheer Maxi Skirt
    • Run down overalls (I can’t seem to find a black pair anywhere!)

Are there any colors you tend to shy away from, and if so why?

I tend to shy away from most shades of brown because I feel that it can sometimes be a bland color. Sometimes it just doesn’t work with my skin, but I am working on finding the right shade for me.

When you hear the term “Black Girl Killing It” what comes to mind?

Confidence. That word comes to me right off the bat. Confidence is the key to being able to achieve anything in this life, so an African American woman showing off her style with pride is confidence, especially with so much criticism in the world right now. You don’t really find that many black women in the fashion industry because sometimes we’re expected to dress raunchy or like a ‘hoochie.’ But obviously from what this site has shown, we can have just as much class as the next race.

As a child were you always into clothes or did you grow into your own fashion sense?

I have always been into clothes from watching my mother. I can truthfully say that my mother is my biggest inspiration. She always taught me how to care for clothes and how this jewelry went with this outfit and how to pair certain shoes with certain clothes. I was always into ‘matchy’ clothes and having everything perfect up until I entered middle school. Once I was in middle school I branched out and created my own style, something was raw with a hint of rockstar. In high school, I found interest in cutting up my clothes and making things look rough and edgy. Grunge became something I latched on to.

Do you participate in your local fashion scene?

There isn’t a fashion scene here in North Carolina, trust me. As corny as this sounds, my town is so bad that when I go out, I just imagine that I’m strutting the streets of New York City. When it comes to fashion, North Carolina lacks it and I can’t wait to move.

How does your day to day life factor into your wardrobe choices?

Well, during the week I attend a high school that has a uniform policy that I always seem to get around. So I mostly have to wear black, khaki, navy, and white and be able to make it work. But on the weekends, I go crazy and get away from those uniform colors.

What is your greatest fashion pet peeve?

Knee high boots. I can’t stand them.

Have you ever tried your hand at design or sewing?

Yep, I sure have. The all black dress in the photos I have provided was sewn by me. This year, I plan to dabble more into design and sewing.

Are there any designers that you like to wear or whose clothing stands out with you?

I’m a thrift shopper, so I don’t really look for designer clothes. I do admire Alexander McQueen’s work though. May he rest in peace.

    Who are your style icons?

Taylor Momsen, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, Zoe Kravitz, and Solange Knowles.

Your five must-haves as a girl:

    • Little Black Dress
    • Black Lipstick
    • High Waist Pants
    • Combat Boots
    • Leather Jacket

Do you find that you follow fashion trends, or do you play by your own rules?

I like to keep my eye on the trends and adapt it to my own style i love the challenge of finding a key piece from the season at an affordable price.

This is our first of three part series where we’ll be featuring the girls that answer your fashion tip questions. Our Black Girl Killing It is Danni Maclin aka L. Danielle…

How old are you and where are you from?

I am 19 years old and from Memphis, TN.

    What inspires you to blog?

Everything inspires me to blog. I’m easily stimulated when it comes to fashion so just about everything inspires me.

How would you define your personal style?

I would call my style girly with an edge. I love the contrast between girly, frilly skirts and dresses with leather accessories or a leather jacket.

Do you find that you follow fashion trends, or do you play by your own rules?

I actually follow trends, but I put my own spin on them. Like I love the leather and lace trend but I like to do a really edgy outfit with a girly twist whereas most people do the opposite.

Items to get, what are you searching for right now?

    • right now I’m searching for a faux fur jacket
    • white pantsuit
    • a fringe bag

Are there any colors you tend to shy away from, and if so why?

I wear any and every color known to man. I don’t like to limit myself when it comes to fashion so completely eliminating a color from my wardrobe would almost kill me.

When you hear the term “Black Girl Killing It” what comes to mind?

A girl completely owning her look. She’s confident, sassy, and in control of her own destiny. She’s killing it in every aspect of her life, from education to fashion.

How has your experience been so far being one of the “Fashion Tip Girls” for BGKI?

It has been wonderful to say the least. I finally get to use some of the knowledge I’ve gained from watching cheesy things like What Not to Wear and the September Issue. I also get to personally thank people that enjoy what we do. That gives me joy beyond belief.

What other features do you think would be ideal for BGKI?

I think BGKI is limitless. I can see t-shirts, a better blog, fashion tips for men, male interviews. I can see it all and hopefully I will get to be a part of it.

As a child were you always into clothes or did you grow into your own fashion sense?

I was always into shopping so I was definitely always into clothing. My aunt, grandmother, and I would go on girls’ day out where we would shop all day, grab lunch, and shop even more. My mom wasn’t much of a girly girl, but she always allowed me to be who I wanted to be. She still jokes about me having two pair of dress shoes, one pair for church and another pair for everywhere else. I was an extreme girly girl when I was younger, but I kind of gradually grew into my own style where everything didn’t have to scream girl.

Do you participate in your local fashion scene?

There really isn’t a fashion scene where I am so I just do my own thing. I stay in a college city so everything is basically centered around that. The fashion sucks! lol

How does your day to day life factor into your wardrobe choices?

I dress the way I feel so my attitude for that day has a strong influence on what I wear. I am a different person every day so I like my clothing to reflect the person I feel like that day. Weather also plays a large role in the decision making process because the weather is so crazy where I live. One day it may be below freezing, but the next day it may be 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Those are the two main factors that influence my wardrobe choices.

What is your greatest fashion pet peeve?

My greatest fashion pet peeve is ill fitting clothing. The fit of clothing is so important. It can make or break an outfit. I have seen gorgeous outfits that looked horrible because they didn’t fit properly. That really irks my jerk lol.

Have you ever tried your hand at design or sewing?

Sewing? Yes. Designing? No. I usually alter my clothing, but I don’t do full out designs.

Are there any designers that you like to wear or whose clothing stands out with you?

I really love Alexander McQueen, Betsey Johnson, and Chanel just to name a few. They have really unique pieces.

    Who are your style icons?

I love Miroslava Duma and Rihanna. They have very different styles, but somehow I find ways to incorporate both of their influences into my own style.

Your five must-haves as a girl:

    • White button down
    • Statement blazer
    • Nice booty jeans
    • Combat boots
    • Statement necklace

Those of you that frequent our Facebook fanpage will be familiar with her as she is the face of Black Girls Killing It and I believe it’s due time you guys and gals got to know a little more about her. Meet Page Harris…

    What inspires you to blog?

I think the beauty of human expression inspires my blog. Creativity is BIG to me & to be honest I post a lot of things that portray the craziness in my head. Yes fashion is a large part of it but many times it’s not the shirt or the shoes, sometimes it could be the sky or the message the image brings.

How would you define your personal style?

Hmmm, I would have to define my personal style as inconsistent because it varies from day to day. I guess u can say it changes with the weather or switches with my ego. With everything I wear simple or jazzy there has to be a statement. It could be a head wrap, or my shoes, or even the lipstick I wear; something that another person can focus on. Some days I’ll dress like a boy (sag my pants, loosen my shirt) but then I’ll throw some heels on or my favorite pair of booties demanding my gender back! I don’t think I really have style; I think I just have personality.

Do you find that you follow fashion trends, or do you play by your own rules?

I am highly influenced by fashion trends yes, but I def. play by my own rules. It’s all a cycle anyways. If your not doing it now you’ll most likely do it later!

Items to get, what are you searching for right now?

    • I’m obsessed with velvet right now! Velvet anything
    • leather anything
    • & of course anything that you can throw on your head!

Are there any colors you tend to shy away from, and if so why?

I shy away from browns, that’s mainly it! Just because it does nothing for me being as though I’m a chocolate girl.

When you hear the term “Black Girl Killing It” what comes to mind?

Immediately I think of Jada P. Smith, Queen Latifah etc. in the movie set it off!! Bad, Black & Beautiful!

As a child were you always into clothes or did you grow into your own fashion sense?

As a child I actually wasn’t really into clothes. I can say I have always been well dressed/groomed but I have always been a tom-boy sorta so if I had a nice pair of sneakers on I was happy! My older brother and sister influenced me a lot because they’ve always been really into fashion & fads.

Do you participate in your local fashion scene?

Sadly not, being as though I attend school in a small part of Alabama & that is where I spend most of my time. Fashion isn’t big there & if you ask me everyone is a tad bit late on things. I appreciate the culture though. I attend/participate in fashion shows etc. but of course I represent myself.

How does your day to day life factor into your wardrobe choices?

My day to day life plays a big role into my wardrobe choices. Its a little hectic. I play sports so you can catch me in alot of athletic wear during my spare time. I don’t have to be at an event to dress up on a normal day and I’m not opposed to dressing casually to something fancy! During the night you can find me in my street walker apparel.

What is your greatest fashion pet peeve?

My greatest fashion pet peeve is being too matchy!!!!

Have you ever tried your hand at design or sewing?

Yes!!! I have tried sewing pieces together because I have countless designs in my head of thing I would love to put together, but it never turns out the way I envisioned. On another note I make alot of jewelry so I guess that makes up for it all! Lol

Are there any designers that you like to wear or whose clothing stands out with you?

I love Chanel anything! But I’m am not big on designers, though I wear alot of it. This is for the simple fact that I hate to wear the same thing twice unless it’s logo less. I dont mind spending pretty pennies on basic YSL logo tees or cute vintage Fendi handbags.

    Who are your style icons?

    • Solange Knowles
    • Lady GaGa
    • Chloe Sevigny
    • All the girls from Sex In The City
    • Olsen Twins
    • & countless people who are not celebs!

Your five must-haves as a girl:

    • Nude lipstick
    • A pair of earth toned platforms
    • An everyday pair of high waisted denims (skinny preferably)
    • Any designer handbag
    • An ATTITUDE!

Shonique Thomas, is our latest Black Girl Killing It, see what she has to say…

How would you define your personal style?

This is probably my least favorite question, because I always feel like in “defining” my style, I’m unconsciously allowing others to put me in a box. I like being able to switch up my looks when I so desire. However, if I had to choose words to describe my general look, they would be: chic, ethereal, edgy, trendy, and urban.

Do you find that you follow fashion trends, or do you play by your own rules?

I’m a combination of both. As an up and coming fashion blogger, I have to stay on top of the latest trends to be able to deliver current and relevant information to my readers. I’m also very experimental with my look, so if a particular trend appeals to me, I will embrace it. However, I don’t religiously embrace all trends, and even the ones that I do include in my wardrobe, I still incorporate my personality, so in that regards I also play by my own rules.

Are there any colors you tend to shy away from, and if so why?

Hot pink is my least favorite color to wear - I tend to avoid it! If you ever so happen to see me in it, you will see it paired with a neutral color, a scarf, a chunky necklace, something to tone it down! I have no clue why, other than I just don’t think it’s my color, lol.

When you hear the term “Black Girl Killing It” what comes to mind?

The first thing that comes to mind is a beautiful, strong, confident, stylish, phenomenal black woman. She is independent and driven, and is “killing it” in every aspect of her life!

Do you accept anyone’s critique or are you confident in your style choices?

I’m my biggest critic. So best believe that when I leave my house, I leave correct! However, if I respect you and your style, I will give an ear to your thoughts.

As a child were you always into clothes or did you grow into your own fashion sense?

I was definitely a “girly girl” growing up. I was always into my appearance; however, at that time it was just about matching! As I grew older, so did my interest in fashion. I’m definitely at the stage where I feel like I own my style.

Do you participate in your local fashion scene?

I currently reside in Gainesville, Fl, where the “local fashion scene” is practically non-existent. The best I can do is to get involved in the few fashion events that my school (University of Florida) hosts.

How does your day to day life factor into your wardrobe choices?

I’m very conscious of my appearance, and so I do like to look my best daily. I get a lot that I “dress up” everyday, and I suppose compared to most, I do; however, I view fashion as a means to express myself, and so I put thought into my daily attire. You won’t catch me wearing a mere jeans and t-shirt and on the rare occasion that I do, I either have a ridiculously busy day ahead or a day of studying in the library - then I opt for absolute comfort.

What is your greatest fashion pet peeve?

My greatest fashion peeve is definitely over accessorizing any outfit! Wearing chandelier earrings and chunky elaborate necklaces simultaneously - DON’T DO IT! Yes indeed, less is often best.

What is your favorite trend right now?

My favorite fashion trend has to be all the denim-wear right now: blazers, shirts, jackets, vests, and cropped jackets. Dark denim, light denim, distressed denim, acid wash denim, etc! Actually, I consider a denim shirt to be a closet staple right now. You can get so much wear out of them! Gives any outfit a certain umph!

Have you ever tried your hand at design or sewing?

The closest I’ve come to sewing is embroidery back in Art class in high school. In terms of designing? Well, I’ve described my vision to someone and had her sketch it. I can’t draw, lol.

Are there any designers that you like to wear or whose clothing stands out with you?

I can’t afford my favorite designers, lol. I’m absolutely in love with Zac Posen, Alexander McQueen, DSquared2, Anna Sui, and Yves Saint Laurent – their clothing stands out the most to me! I love the edgy meets glam meets chic look that their apparel always seem to embody. In terms of clothing I like to wear? I’m a major Forever 21 and H&M junkie! I feel like they bring the high fashion trends to your regular consumer at an affordable price.

Your five must-haves as a girl:

    • Nude Pumps/Oxfords
    • Little Black Dress
    • Black Jacket/Blazer
    • Denim Shirt
    • Confidence!

Nifesimi tells BGKI about her style inspiration…

How would you define your personal style?

My style is daring and ever-evolving.

Do you find that you follow fashion trends, or do you play by your own rules?

I follow certain fashion trends but I always add my own twist to whatever I wear.

Are there any colors you tend to shy away from, and if so why?

I am open to try any and all colors. I think variety is the spice of life.

When you hear the term “Black Girl Killing It” what comes to mind?

I think of talented black woman making a difference, and standing out, in whatever she decides to do.

Do you accept anyone’s critique or are you confident in your style choices?

Although I’m very confident in my style, welcome critiques. Nobody is perfect and I believe that there is always an opportunity to learn and see our self from the eyes of another.

As a child were you always into clothes or did you grow into your own fashion sense?

As a child, I was a tomboy who didn’t care for clothes or fashion. I would definitely say I grew into my fashion sense.

Do you participate in your local fashion scene?

There are few events and activities in fashion where I am but I try to get involved when one opportunity presents itself.

How does your day to day life factor into your wardrobe choices?

I dress according to my mood. Other times, I factor in the activities and functions I would be attending for that day.

What is your greatest fashion pet peeve?

I can’t stand seeing panty lines, chipped nail polish and I don’t care much for men sagging their trousers below the waistline.

What is your favourite trend right now?

Currently, my favorite trend has to be midi skirts with high splits.

Have you ever tried your hand at design or sewing?

I have designed a number of my outfits and I’m really considering learning how to sew.

Are there any designers that you like to wear or whose clothing stands out with you?

I love wearing Max Azria. The fits are perfect for my body type, not to mention that the styles are always chic and refreshing with plenty of femininity in every piece.

Your five must-haves as a girl:

    • black pumps
    • fitted black blazer
    • lipstick
    • watches
    • Eyeliner/mascara

Ashleigh Hutchinson gives BGKI the run down on her ‘daileigh’ style selection…

    What inspires you to blog?

It’s a creative outlet for me, my 9-to-5 does not allow much room for me to creatively express myself, my blog is the perfect space for me to do that.

How would you define your personal style?

Eclectic. It’s not about following and keeping up with the latest trends, but choosing what works best for you. I always like to like to add an unexpected touch to my look. I consider myself a little “daring” at times, if a decision makes me nervous, I have to go for it!

Do you find that you follow fashion trends, or do you play by your own rules?

Rules? There are no rules, you create your own style.

Items to get, what are you searching for right now?

    • platform Mary Janes
    • the perfect versatile coat that can pretty much work with anything in my closet.

Are there any colors you tend to shy away from, and if so why?

I have all colors in my wardrobe! I love playing with different shades.

When you hear the term “Black Girl Killing It” what comes to mind?

Someone that possesses major confidence and killer style that thinks outside the box with their choice in styling.

As a child were you always into clothes or did you grow into your own fashion sense?

As a little girl I loved playing dress up, I think I was more into being a business woman than into fashion.

Do you participate in your local fashion scene?

Yes, I do now. It’s always fun putting a face to a blog. Nights filled with chatting about balancing out your blogger and work life, taking tons of photos and sipping bubbly, always a guaranteed good time. You’d be surprised at how much you and these other bloggers have in common.

How does your day to day life factor into your wardrobe choices?

It honestly doesn’t, I don’t have a glamorous day job, so when I tend to shop I choose pieces that I could wear both at and outside of work - that way I don’t have a limited wardrobe.

What is your greatest fashion pet peeve?

When someone belts a fitted top, I just don’t understand that.

Have you ever tried your hand at design or sewing?

No, but would like to! I come from a family of women that sew, so it is definitely likely to happen.

Are there any designers that you like to wear or whose clothing stands out with you?

Too many to name, I am really loving Alice + Olivia and the Olsen’s line right now, there are just so many, not a fair question :)

    Who are your style icons?

Blake Lively and Rihanna for their daring sense of style, Beyonce because she is always so well put together and Olivia Palermo I love how she plays with prints, something I absolutely love to do.

Your five must-haves as a girl:

    • black heels
    • LBD
    • the perfect jean
    • black blazer
    • nude heels

Christina Brown kills it each and every single day, HAD to interview so her thoughts could be shared…

    What inspires you to blog?

My city! New York is full of such inspiration. Between the amazing street style, the restaurants & nightlife, and the personalities you’ll meet, I never run out of cool things to talk about. Aside from that I’m also very much inspired by the digital world and all the lovely people who live in it and make it interesting.

How would you define your personal style?

You know I get asked this question all the time and I always center around the same theme. I consider myself a balance between uptown sophisticate & downtown boheme. I think the two can co-exist. I make it work (a la Tim Gunn lol)

Do you find that you follow fashion trends, or do you play by your own rules?

I think I put my personal spin on existing trends. I definitely follow them, because I like to keep myself up-to-date and fresh. But I always find a way to make it me. I’m definitely a runway stalker but I don’t let that guide my closet.

Items to get, what are you searching for right now?

    • An amazing mixed-material jacket. I’m thinking something with leather sleeves and either tweed lapels or fur.
    • A really cool tartan cape - I’m big on capes these days.
    • A Cambridge Satchel in FLURO. I friggin love those things. And I absolutely need one before I go to the West Coast for Coachella next year!

Are there any colors you tend to shy away from, and if so why?

Hmm…I like them all! I don’t wear much red but, that’s not really by choice. It just kinda happened that way.

When you hear the term “Black Girl Killing It” what comes to mind?

Someone who’s fierce in their own right, working hard and making a mark on the world in some way, shape or form.

As a child were you always into clothes or did you grow into your own fashion sense?

I grew into it! When I was a child, I wore a uniform to school lol so that definitely stifled my fashion sense. But I grew to love and appreciate fashion as I grew older and wiser.

Do you participate in your local fashion scene?

Of course! I’m at NYFW every season and I attend events in NY on a regular basis.

How does your day to day life factor into your wardrobe choices?

I’m definitely the girl who likes to be stylish but practical. When I’m hopping from my 9-5 to happy hour cocktails or a beauty event, I have to maintain looking cute but still comfortable. No stilettos on the weekdays. I’m strictly a wedge girl from M-F.

What is your greatest fashion pet peeve?

People who go along with the status quo or hop onto an item just because “so and so” says it’s cool. You be the judge of cool, don’t let someone else be that for you.

Have you ever tried your hand at design or sewing?

Yes! When I was in high school, I founded a group called Sewing & Style (corny I know) but it was all about learning how to sew and incorporating that into being stylish. We even threw a bake sale at school and raised enough money to buy our own sewing machine! Definitely one of my finer accomplishments lol

Are there any designers that you like to wear or whose clothing stands out with you?

Ugh, there are so many! I would say, for wearability I love RACHEL Rachel Roy. Her designs are so practical and yet still feminine and fun. I love the classic chic of a DVF dress. That woman exudes style from her head to her fingertips. As for newcomers, I have some super cool friends who founded a Nigerian-based line called Republic of Foreigner that I absolutely love.

    Who are your style icons?

Well if we’re talking icons, I have to say the timeless glamour of Diana Ross. In that same vein, her super chic offspring Tracee Ellis Ross gives me so much life. Solange Knowles - there’s just something about her. And I’d have to go with the ladylike simplicity of Audrey Hepburn.

Your five must-haves as a girl:

    • A killer shoe
    • A classic red lip
    • The perfect black skinny pant
    • A tailored blazer
    • Coconut oil (for my natural hair)

Bianca is our latest BGKI and she shares her style inspiration with us…

    What inspires you to blog?

I needed an outlet to express myself and plus my mom kept telling me to do it

How would you define your personal style?

80s androygny & power dressing, mix with 90s weird kid.

Do you find that you follow fashion trends, or do you play by your own rules?

Of course I take note of what’s out there, especially when it comes to color trends—but I play by my rules. I get annoyed when every girl throws on some denim cut offs and platform shoes and says “look I’m fashionable now” being fashionable does don’t mean everyone looks alike. It’s about personal style. What makes this look say “you”

Items to get, what are you searching for right now?

    • a coat that says “blade runner” I really liked some coats by BBDakota, but so did everyone else. Its my biggest flaw to stop liking something once everyone else jumps on board.
    • I am also on the hunt for some good pants, any suggestions? ;)

Are there any colors you tend to shy away from, and if so why?

I don’t wear a lot of black, simply because my mom wouldn’t let me as a kid because it was “too adult” now I just forget to wear it but I’m trying to incorporate it more into my looks. Who knows this winter, I’m feeling very Stevie Nicks meets Cher via mermaids.

When you hear the term “Black Girl Killing It” what comes to mind?

I think of not just fashionable black girls, I think about black girls who know how to make a statement with confidence.

As a child were you always into clothes or did you grow into your own fashion sense?

Oh yes, I was always into clothes, I vividly remember picking out my look for my first day of kindergarten. Leggings, polka dots, mustard, fuchsia, and teal. Not much has changed.

Do you participate in your local fashion scene?

When I can. Chicago doesn’t do much, and with working and school I don’t get a lot of time to socialize outside of hanging out with my friends. I have been trying to get into it more since I started blogging more seriously. But I’m so awkward I usually stay home and watch project runway instead. :P

How does your day to day life factor into your wardrobe choices?

With blogging I have to force myself out of t-shirts by threadless and skinny jeans. I have to consider my look, and dress up for myself. The more I dress up for me, the more I love it. When I feel like I’m doing it for others I often feel uncomfortable.

What is your greatest fashion pet peeve?

As stated before, copy cat dressing. There’s a difference between taking inspiration and just merely ripping someone off to try to get “reblogs” or “hype”. How many denim cutoffs and platform shoes does my dashboard need?

Have you ever tried your hand at design or sewing?

Yes I have done some design work and some collaborations with designer, but more on that soon ;)

Are there any designers that you like to wear or whose clothing stands out with you?

I am a pendleton whore, I try to collect as much vintage pendleton as I possibly can! I squeal with joy when I can find a piece at my local thrift store for 2 bucks versus 200 at opening ceremony (who I also LOVE). I also adoring Tara Jarmon, Oscar de la Renta, and Milly right now.

    Who are your style icons?

Chloe Sevingy, Solange Knowles, Bianca Jagger, Denis Huxtable, and all the grandmothers of the world!

Your five must-haves as a girl:

    • Brown loafers
    • Over-sized Blazer
    • Statement Watch
    • Vintage Sweater
    • Chambray Button Down
