Kenyatta Jones takes BGKI through her “Style Junkyard“…
What inspires you to blog?
I use to read Style Rookie and Bryan Boy and was like “wow, I can totally do this”. I want to get into styling and I believe blogging is a good way to get my name out there and my style point of view across.
How would you define your personal style?
My style is simple with an edge. I wear what anyone can wear, its relatable but I add a funky shoe or accessory or coordinate my colors unexpectedly. I wear what feel goods at the moment so my style changes often but it’s never overworked.
Do you find that you follow fashion trends, or do you play by your own rules?
I do both. I don’t follow trends 100% but I am well aware of them. I don’t care if something is not on trend if I like it and it looks good I’ll wear it. I do follow color trends esp. with nail polish.
Items to get, what are you searching for right now?
I’ve been wanting colored denim and actually just purchased a few pair that will be featured in an upcoming post. I’m looking for a really nice leather jacket, something I can wear for any occasion. I also just bought a new pair of military style boots which I have been wanting to buy.
Are there any colors you tend to shy away from, and if so why?
I don’t wear brown or pinks. I like dark colors so even if its a green or red it needs to be deep and rich.
When you hear the term “Black Girl Killing It” what comes to mind?
I think of a confident girl that you can’t help but to look at and say “she’s bomb!” Someone that has a style point-of-view. Even if you can’t see yourself rocking her looks you still love it!
As a child were you always into clothes or did you grow into your own fashion sense?
I’ve definitely always been into clothes and how I look. But as a child/adolescent I followed trends much more. As I got older I started experimenting more and going through different phases.
Do you participate in your local fashion scene?
Not as much a I should. But I am pretty in tuned into what’s going on.
How does your day to day life factor into your wardrobe choices?
I’m a full time student so I dress down more during the week i.e no heels but I’m always “fashionable” because I’m constantly uploading what I wear daily to Instagram, Facebook, etc. Fridays and the weekend I dress up, this is when I’m doing more social things.
What is your greatest fashion pet peeve?
I HATE ill fitting clothes, and toes hanging off shoes.
Have you ever tried your hand at design or sewing?
I can sew but I not good enough to become a designer. I don’t really have a desire to. I like to dress and put looks together and make people look good. I’ll leave the designing to the designers.
Are there any designers that you like to wear or whose clothing stands out with you?
I love most major designers but I more for indie labels. I love Funktional Clothing and StyleStalker. There’s quite a few I love but I won’t name them all.
Who are your style icons?
Honestly I don’t have any, well as far as designers are concerned. I admire certain peoples style like Zoe Saldana, Halle berry, Zoe Kravitz, Lisa Bonet (just a few) but there isn’t one person I can say totally influences my style.
