BGKI caught up with Lola Jaro. When I saw her blog… style monster came to mind. See what she says about her style…
How would you define your personal style?
I have a difficult time with this question. I feel like my style is (at least I attempt it to be) ever evolving and changing. What I like today, I might not like tomorrow. I tend to be all over the place and it mainly depends on my mood. I suppose one commonality is that I tend to be a minimalist. I am not into tons of jewelry or accessories, I try to keep a clean look.
Do you find that you follow fashion trends, or do you play by your own rules?
I don’t intentionally follow trends. Now and then a trend comes about that I adore but there are also trends that I avoid like the plague. I don’t do something just because it is popular, I have to genuinely like it.
Are there any colors you tend to shy away from, and if so why?
I have always been an earth tone and neutral color type of girl. Now and then I wear color but I wouldn’t exactly call it a ‘pop’ of color. Red is a color I loathe. I don’t know why. Not burgundy or wine. I seem to be fine with shades of red, but true red. That bright red just completely turns me off.
When you hear the term “Black Girl Killing It” what comes to mind?
I immediately think of a girl/woman of color rocking her style with a confidence and a swag that only she could. Everyone can try and imitate but none can duplicate, because the truth is even if we all dig this one girls outfit we’d all rock it differently to reflect our own personalities.
Do you accept anyone’s critique or are you confident in your style choices?
I’m pretty confident in my choices. I might ask people I am close to for their opinions just to get an idea of how other people may perceive my outfit but I have the final say. If someone thinks it’s kind of a crazy outfit but I feel good in it…then that’s that.
As a child were you always into clothes or did you grow into your own fashion sense?
I was always into clothes but I had no direction. I had no idea what I liked or where to find it. I just knew what I didn’t like. We didn’t have a lot of money growing up so clothes came from not so fashionable places and in not so pleasant styles and even as a child I knew there had to be something better out there. I honestly still feel like I am not entirely ‘there’ yet but that I am heading in the right direction. It just takes a lot of experimentation.
Do you participate in your local fashion scene?
I am not sure there is a local fashion scene in orlando! I mean the general uniform here are flip flops, tank top and jean shorts. I tend to stand out as being ‘overdressed’. However, I am originally from NY and the schools I went to up there, everyday was like a fashion show and all the girls wore heels all the time. I wouldn’t have been caught dead in sneakers in the past! It’s a huge difference.
How does your day to day life factor into your wardrobe choices?
I try not to dress too inappropriately for the situation. For instance, I am pretty much just a full time student now. So I spend too much time on campus and too little anywhere else. So I try to keep in mind that I will be rushing from class to class in a sea of people who wear flip flops and pajama pants! I don’t like drawing attention to myself but I am not beyond it if that’s the result of wearing what I want. All in all I try to mesh together my true style with the needs of situation i.e. comfort and ease of mobility! I’m the type of girl that would wear 6 inch heels and dress 24/7 if I could but it isn’t always practical. ::sad face::
What is your greatest fashion pet peeve?
Oh! This is an easy one!! Crocs and people that wear leggings as though they were jeans! Ugh! Just no! Stop it! It’s all wrong. Leggings are NOT jean alternates!! It requires a certain amount coverage from your shirt/ tunic. I should not be able to make out your lady bits through the thinness of the fabric!! Crocs are just plain ugly. Nothing can save those. I was appalled when everyone jumped on the croc bandwagon. For nurses, doctors, you know the jobs where you are on your feet all day and are wearing scrubs anyway, yes! For day to day…no. Please make the madness stop.
What is your favorite trend right now?
Color blocking, mixing of prints, sparkly ankle boots… oh the list goes on.
Have you ever tried your hand at design or sewing?
Actually, yes. I just bought my first sewing machine and plan on taking sewing classes in the near future. So, we shall see how that plays out. I find, I desire to learn more out of the necessity of having the clothing items I can’t afford to buy or those items I have in my head but just don’t seem to exist. So it is for purely selfish reasons!!
Are there any designers that you like to wear or whose clothing stands out with you?
Of course I love Alexander Wang but what girl from my generation doesn’t. Christopher Kane has been producing amazing work as well. Then you have the usual players like Prada and Chanel. Also, the label Band of Outsiders. Again, the list goes on!
Your five must-haves as a girl:
oh wow this is a toughie! My must-haves will probably change within a week!
- Nude heels (go with practically everything and serious leg lengtheners!)
- A good pair of STYLISH flats
- An awesome romper (for those days when I have ‘nothing’ to wear or am in a rush)
- A good pair of high-waisted wide legged jeans (leg lengtheners and awesome paired with cropped tops)
- aaannnddd nude nail polish ( again, goes with everything and is so posh).
