Black Girl Killing It interviews the fashion conscious sisters Lebeam and Nizuwah, call it happy hour…
How would you define your personal style?
Lebeam: African in NewYork
Nizuwah: I’m not sure how to define my style.
Do you find that you follow fashion trends, or do you play by your own rules?
Lebeam: I play by my own rules. I wear what I like, and what looks good on me. I don’t really pay attention to seasonal trends.
Nizuwah: I pay attention to the trends, but I don’t let them define my style. If I like something I’ll wear it, regardless of what the trend is.
Are there any colours you tend to shy away from, and if so why?
Lebeam: No I don’t shy away from certain colors, but I tend to lean more towards neutrals.
Nizuwah: I’m not a fan of bright colors against my skin. I like darker colors.
When you hear the term “Black Girl Killing It” what comes to mind?
Lebeam: A black woman that’s dressed to the nines.
Nizuwah: A black girl thats on point in terms of fashion
Do you accept anyone’s critique or are you confident in your style choices?
Lebeam: The only critiques that I take into consideration are people in my inner circle who’s fashion sense I appreciate. Otherwise I’m confident.
Nizuwah: I acknowledge critiques but only apply them if I agree with what is being said.
As a child were you always into clothes or did you grow into your own fashion sense?
Lebeam: Do you remember when mom and dad used to dress us as twins, with cosbys sweaters and jeans?
Nizuwah: Haha yea, they were pretty stylish.
Lebeam: I feel like that is when I began to become aware about what fashion was.
Nizuwah: Yea, I feel like that early influences really shaped my fashion sense.
Do you participate in your local fashion scene?
Lebeam: Well I live in NYC , so for me, participating in my local fashion scene is waking up each morning and deciding what outfit best represents me that day.
Nizuwah: I don’t outwardly participate in Denver’s fashion scene. I participate in my own way, by deciding which clothes I buy and what outfits I put together, and creating my own trends.
How does your day to day life factor into your wardrobe choices?
Lebeam: Being a mother,I am always on the move so I try to find pieces that allow movement and comfort, but that are still stylish.
Nizuwah: I currently work in a very conservative industry, so I sometimes have a hard time finding pieces that work with my style and are still appropriate for work.
What is your greatest fashion pet peeve?
Lebeam: Ill fitting clothes, too tight never looks good.
Nizuwah: When people try to hard to fit into a certain mold, or trend.
What is your favourite trend right now?
Lebeam: My favorite trend overall is Androgny.
Nizuwah: Dark Lipstick, and high wasted tailored pants.
Have you ever tried your hand at design or sewing?
Lebeam: Yes, I have an online shop with some pieces I’ve designed, My shop is kidanbylebeam.bigcartel.com.
Nizuwah: No, I tried knitting once, it didn’t work very well
Are there any designers that you like to wear or whose clothing stands out with you?
Lebeam: I love Comme des Garçon, Ralph Lauren, and Issey Miyika.
