Black Girl Killing It - Interview #7 - ruttybee
How would you define your personal style?
I could never really define my style because I don’t like constraints. There are elements from a variety of different styles that are incorporated into my overall look. I see style as a form of art that channels self-expression. So why should it be limited? My feelings, thoughts, and mood are the factors that influence my look. Sometimes I’m simple and sometimes I’m fierce. If I could describe my style in three words I would say urban, vintage, and chic. However they are simply the platform. I continuously extract different elements from certain styles to add to my own. My style is forever evolving and limitless.
Do you find that you follow fashion trends or do you play by your own rules?
When I’m getting dress I always say to myself “anything goes”. I don’t live by any “fashion rules” or follow every fashion trend. However if I like something that happens to be a trend I’m not going to stop liking it simply because everyone is doing it. Jeffrey Campbell is the perfect example. I love his shoes and have been a fan for some time. But now it seems like every girl has a pair of JC shoes. I’m not going to stop liking Jeffrey Campbell just because everyone else does. But I definitely don’t start hopping on trends just because that’s what’s “in” at the time. Not everything is for me. I have to really like it…matter fact LOVE it in order to do it.
Are there any colours you tend to shy away from, and if so why?
I don’t wear brown clothing because I am brown lol. However, brown bags, shoes and belts are essentials.
As a child were you always into clothes or did you grow into your own fashion sense?
I definitely wasn’t into clothes growing up. I followed every trend. Good or bad. Had many hot mess moments. My fashion sense developed in high school after being inspired by many different things and people.
How does your day to day life factor into your wardrobe choices?
The places I go definitely factor into my wardrobe choices. When shopping I tend to try and buy pieces that can be worn to church, dinner, and business related functions. Since I’m getting older I go to more places that require some sophistication. It’s not all play as it used to be.
Are there any designers that you like to wear or whose clothing stands out with you?
I’m not really a big label girl. However there are a few designers that stand out to me. For instance Maya A. Lake. I can always tell it’s her stuff; especially from the print. As I mentioned before I like Jeffrey Campbell. I also like Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors.
