Black Girl Killing It - Interview #18 - Chanel Butler

How would you define your personal style?

I’m not even sure that I can define my personal style, or at least not in terms of it being one concrete style. I wake up and essentially, my style varies depending the mood that I’m in or on the weather, etc. But for argument’s sake, I suppose that I’m a mix of J.Crew (preppy) meets June Ambrose (funky) with a hint of Rachel Zoe (boho chic).

Do you find that you follow fashion trends, or do you play by your own rules?

I would have to say both. I’m certainly aware of the many trends that flow in and out of fashion, but I casually  take each trend and reinterpret it according to my own personal style.

Are there any colours you tend to shy away from, and if so why?

Absolutely not. I believe that (a) color can tells someone’s story and convey a particular message. From this summers biggest trend of color blocking and in taking that into the fall, I believe color is a key factor to impeccable style.

When you hear the term “Black Girl Killing It” what comes to mind?

"Black Girl Killing It" remindes me of the "diva-ness" that is innately a part of many black women. Being sassy but not pushy, fabulousnes, and classy all wrapped in one is representative of a "Black Girl Killing It" in my opinion. She knows who she is, where she’s going, and takes nothing from no one.

Do you accept anyone’s critique or are you confident in your style choices?

Both. I am open to a person’s critique so long as it’s constrictive critique. But also, it’s kind of like how do you critique someone’s personal style? Everyone has their own taste and ideas about what style is, therefore it would be hard to do so. Nevertheless, for the most part, I am very confident in my style choices.

As a child were you always into clothes or did you grow into your own fashion sense?

Both. I was always “interested” in fashion and loved to play dress up, even throughout high school (confession). Lol. But it really wasnt until I started that I began to find my interest in it a complete love affair.

Do you participate in your local fashion scene?

Yes and no. I currently live in DC which isnt the most fashionable place to be..or at least not where I live. But, I do try and participate in activities held in the area, the most recent having been Fashion Night Out in Georgetown.

How does your day to day life factor into your wardrobe choices?

My day-to-day life is a tremendous factor for my wardrobe choices. Depending on the weather and how I’m feeling, my choice for one day may be Hunter rainboots and an over-sized chambray,  whereas another day I may sport a floor-length pleated maxi skirt with a rolled-up sweater and major jewelry. So really, it all depends on that particular day.

What is your greatest fashion pet peeve?

Honestly, I’m not even sure that I’ve ever thought about it before. But one thing I do hate seeing is a person wearing a piece whether it be a top or pants, and it not fitting properly. Whether too big or too small, tayloring is key to great style. And plus, why would you want to walk around with either a camel-toe or looking as if you just got done shopping the local Big and Tall store…that’s beyond me.

What is your favourite trend right now?

My favourite trend right now would be between the return of  wide-leg/flared jeans and pants as well as the return of ponchos and capes. These are classic trends are are re-occuring in fashion and I’m excited that they’re back, better than ever!

Have you ever tried your hand at design or sewing?

Yes and I suck therefore I leave it to those that are naturally great at it.

Are there any designers that you like to wear or whose clothing stands out with you?

Absolutely love Rachel Roy, she always has great menswear pieces. J.Crew…I love everything about them. Alexander Wang is a great go-to for basics such as tees and dresses, although he  always has amazing shoes and handbags. And of course Chanel. Everything from the classic Jumbo Flap Caviar handbag to the tweed jackets and skirts is simply amazing. Oh and let’s not forget about Rachel Zoe’s new collection(s)…”bananas”.

Your five must-haves as a girl:

  • black or nude flats
  • oversized or aviator sunglasses
  • (mens) watch silver, gold, or rosegold
  • cashmere sweater
  • black handbag that is perfect for any outfit.
